Fine Spindle Turning Intensive October 21 - 23, 2026

$1,245.00

Wednesday, October 21 - Friday, October 23, 2026
10 am - 6 pm

This class begins with the fundamentals of spindle turning - covering techniques to make basic cuts and shapes. Next, we transfer this knowledge to working on multiple projects, including finial turning and making a sea urchin ornament. We discuss grain orientation and how it affects the way we approach the wood. As always, we discuss freehand grinding using a bench grinder and a platform, and basic elements of design. We will be using the Push Cut style of turning to minimize torn grain in the wood and negative impact on the body. No experience required. We will turn two or more finished projects in this class, although it is more of a technique focused class rather than a project based course.

All classes listed are offered at Ashley Harwood’s classroom studio in Charleston, SC - on Johns Island. All tools and equipment, safety equipment, materials and lunches are provided. All lathes are full sized, 3hp. Classes are limited to seven students in order to maximize hands-on instruction. Please sign up as soon as possible - because space is limited, classes do fill up!

Of the registration fee, $400 is non-refundable.
